What Depthwork calls a Borrowed Mirror
A Borrowed Mirror is an inherited way of seeing yourself, leadership or success that can become so familiar it no longer feels inherited. Those ways of seeing can influence what gets escalated, who gets heard, and how much a leader feels able to rest.
Depthwork is trauma-aware but it is not therapy. It is a leadership practice: name the pattern, understand its cost, then rehearse a different response until it holds under pressure.
“A leader must always have the answer.”
“Being indispensable proves value.”
“Disagreement threatens authority.”
Where inheritance meets leadership
Every institution has a visible game, a hidden game and a historical game. Experienced leaders often learn to read the first two. Depthwork makes deliberate room to examine the third.
Roles, targets, structures, policies and formal authority. What the institution measures and rewards.
Relationships, loyalties, informal power and unwritten rules. What moves decisions.
The inheritances that shape authority, legitimacy and what feels possible long after the circumstances that produced them have changed.
The Depthwork Arc
Reveal, Reframe, Rebuild and Regenerate are not fixed sessions. Across four days you move through them and return, each pass on a live leadership challenge.
Notice what is already running: where your ideas about success, authority and worth came from.
Understand the pattern differently: what once protected or enabled you, and what it may be costing now.
Reclaim your judgement, capability and voice, then practise different responses so insight holds under pressure.
Consider what this changes in your decisions, relationships and the conditions you create around you.
What you leave with
A clearer account of the assumptions and inheritances influencing how you lead.
Greater ability to notice how those patterns show up under pressure.
A sharper read of visible, hidden and historical dynamics around a live leadership challenge.
One or two leadership practices to test over the following 90 days.
