Methodology

How Depthwork works.

Depthwork examines the assumptions, inheritances and pressures that quietly govern how authority is exercised, and builds the practice to respond differently.

Where inheritance meets leadership

The Three Games at Work

Every institution has a visible game, a hidden game and a historical game. Experienced leaders often learn to read the first two. Depthwork makes deliberate room to examine the third.

01

The Visible Game

Roles, targets, structures, policies and formal authority. What the institution measures and rewards.

02

The Hidden Game

Relationships, loyalties, informal power and unwritten rules. What moves decisions.

03

The Historical Game

The inheritances that shape authority, legitimacy and what feels possible long after the circumstances that produced them have changed.

The Borrowed Mirror

An inherited way of seeing yourself, leadership or success.

A Borrowed Mirror is an inherited way of seeing yourself, leadership or success that can become so familiar it no longer feels inherited. These ways of seeing were often useful once. They become expensive when they run unexamined, shaping who gets heard, what gets escalated and how much a leader feels able to rest.

  • A leader must always have the answer.

  • Being indispensable proves value.

  • Disagreement threatens authority.

  • Depthwork does not replace one prescription with another. It makes the pattern visible enough to choose.

The Depthwork Arc

Four movements, worked as a circle.

Reveal, Reframe, Rebuild, Regenerate, and around again. The movement is continuous, not a sequence of modules to be completed once.

  1. 01

    Reveal

Notice what is already running: where your ideas about success, authority and worth came from.

  2. 02

    Reframe

Understand the pattern differently: what once protected or enabled you, and what it may be costing now.

  3. 03

    Rebuild

Reclaim your judgement, capability and voice, then practise different responses so insight holds under pressure.

  4. 04

    Regenerate

Consider what this changes in your decisions, relationships and the conditions you create around you.

Seven doorways

The object of the work is the person in context.

Select a doorway on the wheel to bring its line of inquiry to the centre. The doorways are not a scorecard. They are openings for noticing.

African intellectual grounding

What the grounding changes in practice.

Ubuntu

Because the self is understood relationally, the work does not treat the leader as an isolated individual.

Sankofa

Inheritance is explored not only for what may need to be released, but also for what may be worth retrieving.

Ma'at

Truth, balance, pace and right relation matter more than forcing a breakthrough.

Ujamaa

The work asks what leadership goes on to create for other people and institutions.

How the practitioner holds the room

  • Witness
  • Mirror-holder
  • Pattern-noticer
  • Context-restorer
  • Steward of inquiry
  • Guardian of pace

What this protects

  • The primary inquiry stays with the person in context, not organisational redesign.
  • You remain author of your own meaning and choices. No preferred identity is installed.
  • The doorways are lines of inquiry, never a scorecard or a personality type.
  • Where it matters, the inquiry reaches what you are now passing on to others.
